Credits Count Young Men of Color in STEM Career Conference
The Credits Count Young Men of Color in STEM Career Conference was a one-day intensive study of STEM careers where students experienced hands-on STEM challenges facilitated by real STEM professionals, mentorships from STEM professionals and two inspirational speakers.

Astronaut Leland Melvin was the perfect choice for this year's keynote speaker. He used his life story as an athlete, astronaut, scientist, engineer, photographer, and musician to help inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue STEM careers.

Leland flew twice on the Shuttle Atlantis, helping to build the International Space Station. It's one piece of a remarkable career that includes being drafted by the Detroit Lions and overcoming hearing loss.

Leland has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in materials science engineering. After hanging up his space boots he was appointed head of NASA Education and served as the co-chair on the White House’s Federal Coordination in STEM Education Task Force. Leland is also currently seen as the host of the Lifetime competition series Child Genius and a judge for ABC’s competition series BattleBots.
